The red ribbon is an international symbol of Aids
awareness hat is worn by people all the year round and particularly around the
world aids day to demonstrate care and concern about hiv and aidsand to remind
others of the need for their support and commitment.we must consider the people
suffering from hiv as our own fellow beings, show love and affection to them.
THE FIRST CASE OF AIDS WAS REPORTED IN 1981 IN
Around
95% of people with HIV/AIDS live in developing nations. But HIV today is a
threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world.
AFTER A PERSON CATCHES THE HIV INFECTION, HE REMAINS HEALTHY FOR A
PERIOD OF ABOUT NINE YEARS. THE INFECTED PERSON MAY DEVELOP LOW GREAT FEVER,
ENLARGEMENT OF NYMPH NODES, CHRONIC DIARRHOEA AND SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT LOSS THAT
MAY BE ALMOST UPTO 10 pc PER MONTH. THE PETIENT MAY ALSO CATCH OTHER INFECTIONS
SUCH AS SKIN INFECTIONS, INFECTION OF MUCOUS MEMBRANES, PNEUMONIA AND
TUBERCULOSIS. THE BRAI MAY ALSO BE AFFECTED. GRADUALLY THE PATIENT BECOMES VERY
WEAK AND DEATH MAY OVERPOWER HIM WITHIN 1 TO 3 YEARS.
GENERALLY “ELISA” TEST AND THE “WESTERN
BLOT” TEST ARE USED FOR THE DETECTION OF HIV INFECTION IN THE BLOOD.
AIDS INFECTION IS SPREAD IN THE
1) BY
USING INFECTED SYRINGES OR NEEDLES FOR BLOOD TRANSFUSION OR INJECTING DRUGS
etc.
2) TRANFUSION
OF BLOOD OR BLOOD PRODUCTS INFECTED WITH HIV.
3) FROM
INFECTED MOTHER TO AN UNBORN CHILD.
4) IT IS
SPREAD MAINLY THROUGH AN UNPROTECTED SEXUAL CONTACT WITH AN INFECTED PARTNER.
THE HIV ON THE OTHER HAND DOES NOT SPREAD BY SHAKING HANDS OF AN INFECTED
PERSON, BY EMBRACING HIM OR BY SHARING MEALS OR EATING FROM THE SAME PLATE.
MOSQUITOES DO NOT CARRY THIS INFECTION AND IT ALSO NOT SPREAD THROUGH THE USE
OF SAME CLOTHES OR BEDSHEETS.
AIDS CAN BE PREVENTED BY TAKING THE FOLLOWING
PRECAUTIONS:
1) NEVER
USING INFECTED SYRINGES OR NEEDLES. IT SHOULD BE MADE SURE THAT THE INJECTING
EQUIPMENT IS FULLY STERILIZED BEFORE USE.
2) BY
MAKING SURE THAT BLOOD OR BLOOD PRODUCTS ARETESTED AND ARE FREE OF H.I.V EFORE
TRANSFUSION.
3) BY
PRATICING SAFER SEX.
THROUGH THE CURE OF AIDS IS NOT POSSIBLE SO FAR,
PREVENTION IS POSSIBLE AN DIS IN THE HANDS OF
INIDIVIDUALS. THEREFORE, ALL THE PREVENTIVE MEASURES SHOULD BE TAKEN TO CHECK
THIS DEADLY MENACE. THE H.I.V POSITIVE PEAPLE SHOULD BE TOLD HOW TO PROTECT
THEIR FUTURE SEX PARTNERS OR CHILDREN.
The WAC’s slogan for their work is "Stop AIDS:
Keep the Promise". This is an appeal to governments, policy makers and regional health
authorities to ensure that they meet the many targets that have been set in the
fight against HIV and AIDS, and especially the promise of universal access to
HIV treatment, care, support and prevention services by 2010. This campaign
will run until 2010, with a related theme
Stop AIDS in Children
In line with
this year's theme, AVERT is running the Stop AIDS in Children campaign to call
for urgent action in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT).
Currently only 9% of pregnant women living with HIV
in the developing world are provided with drugs to prevent the virus being
transmitted to their babies. As a result, nearly half a million children become
infected with HIV every year. The Stop AIDS in Children campaign is calling on
governments and international agencies to urgently improve PMTCT coverage
worldwide.
